The book uses insights from anthropology, communication, political economy and sociology to illuminate the ubiquitous presence of sports in politics, identity, business and education. Sports events, participation, and sports programming in the media have come to play an outsize role in contemporary society. Global events like the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup draw billions of viewers but at the same time sports retain a distinctly local flavor.
